Community Wealth Building
I take pride in being a founder and initial strategic development lead for pioneering local charities and social enterprises, including Barracks Lane Garden (founded in 2006), and Flo’s – The Place in the Park (registered as a community benefit society in 2018). Additionally, I continue to serve as a director for The Nature Effect (founded in 2012).
Over the last 12 years I have followed a hunch to work with others to incubate community enterprises in my home city of Oxford and now I really enjoy supporting others to do the same. There is an increasing need for ventures that foster a sense of common purpose, solidarity, and shared ownership within local communities. Many inspiring individuals and projects are already making strides in this direction, and I’ve been fortunate to work alongside many of them.

Community Wealth Building operates at the intersection of public sector responsibility, democratic concern for the welfare of our fellow citizens, and private enterprise that meets our material needs. Its aim is to reinvest profits back into the community that generates them, adding social and economic value locally instead of extracting it— as happens when business and profits are diverted to distant businesses and shareholders with no local ties. Community Wealth Building is not just about financial gain; it is fueled by a commitment to purposeful efforts that tackle social and environmental injustices. It unites people with a shared vision of creating happier, healthier communities for all—people, place, and planet.

Why is this important? Years of austere public sector funding, Brexit, international conflicts, migration, and climate crises have dominated the headlines. These factors have profoundly affected how we shop and access services, driven by market globalisation and the digital revolution. As a result, social inequalities have widened in many areas, and communities have become more fragmented.

“Annie is an inspiring leader, and has an ability to spot and nurture talent and guide everyone towards a shared vision. Working with Annie and her team has been an absolute pleasure! In particular, I have appreciated her ability to connect individuals and ideas with each other to enable effective innovation and foster creativity, whilst also remaining pragmatic in her approach and empathetic to the needs of the wider community.”
